Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 14 that Nieves Alexander Acosta-Maldanado was booked into custody on charges of murder and felony child abuse in connection with the death of his 8-month-old son. The sheriff’s office said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives identified Acosta-Maldanado as the suspect in the non-accidental death, arrested him, and transferred him to county custody.
The case stems from an assist medic call on May 3, where first responders found the infant unresponsive with signs of non-accidental trauma. The child was later pronounced deceased on May 6. Detectives interviewed Acosta-Maldanado at the Law Enforcement Center before charging him and transferring custody, according to <a href="https://mecksheriffweb.mecklenburgcountync.gov/Inmate/Details?a=MDAwMDUyNjEwNiwyNi0xMTkzNjMsRmFsc2UsLEFjb3N0YSxBTEwsNTAsMQ%3D%3D”>Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office inmate records.
Child fatalities remain a significant concern in Mecklenburg County. In 2022, the county recorded some of the highest child fatality numbers in North Carolina, with 61 reported cases among leading counties statewide. Violent deaths from 2014 to 2023 included hundreds of homicides and other incidents affecting families and children in the Charlotte area. The sheriff’s office manages the county detention center where such cases are processed after arrests by local police, according to <a href="https://www.ocme.dhhs.nc.gov/annreport/docs/2022ChildFatalityAnnualReport.pdf”>the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Nationally, an estimated 1,773 children died from abuse and neglect across the United States in federal fiscal year 2024 at a rate of 2.41 per 100,000 children. Infants younger than one year old represented nearly half of those fatalities, with boys showing a higher rate than girls. Abusive head trauma remains a leading cause among the youngest victims and is often linked to caregiver actions, according to <a href="https://acf.gov/cb/report/child-maltreatment-2024″>the Administration for Children & Families.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is recognized as the largest sheriff’s office in North Carolina and South Carolina, serving over one million residents across 526 square miles including Charlotte. Sheriff Garry L. McFadden has led the office since his election in 2018 following a long career with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department as a homicide detective, according to <a href="https://mcsheriffs.com/biographies/sheriff-garry-mcfadden”>the sheriff’s office.
