County of Mecklenburg issued the following announcement on Sept. 26.
Homelessness Report has been released. The report is part of a local series about housing instability and homelessness funded by Mecklenburg County Community Support Services and produced by the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute. This is the only community housing report that combines all data on housing and homelessness across the housing continuum.
The 2019 report has three new data points including expanded data on the rental mismatch in Mecklenburg County; the release of “One Number” to more accurately depict how many people are experiencing homelessness; and the number of affordable rental units with federal subsidies that are set to expire.
Report data shows that housing instability and homelessness indicators reflect an overall increase in the need for both access to and inventory of affordable housing. While Charlotte-Mecklenburg continues to make some progress to end and prevent homelessness and increase affordable housing, the report shows it is not enough, especially for households of color and for those at the lowest income.
Some of the key findings of the report include:
More than half of African American and Latinx renter households are cost-burdened, spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing related expenses.
There were 2,106 individuals experiencing homelessness in the community in the last fiscal year.
The largest gap in affordable housing continues to be for households earning below 30 percent of Area Median Income.
