The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Andrew Murray issued a statement in February criticizing both Mecklenburg and Buncombe counties for their sanctuary policies.

These sanctuary policies are in place to potentially protect people in the country illegally from deportation from the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Murray argues that the counties are prioritizing criminals over its citizens.

“By ignoring federal immigration detainers and administrative warrants, and refusing to simply inform ICE officers when an unlawful alien who has committed a criminal act is due to be released to the community, the sheriffs of Mecklenburg and Buncombe counties prioritize the protection of criminal aliens above the safety and protection of our communities,” Murray stated in a release, as reported by Mountain Express

Murray sated in Mecklenburg County in 2019, the sheriff's office did not honor more than 200 detainers issued by ICE.
