Town Of Cornelius Police Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 1.

The Cornelius Police Department would like to remind you that no law enforcement agency, utility company, or other government agency will call you and tell you to pay them in gift cards or by wire transfer. 

These scammers like to say you will be arrested if you do not comply with their demands. 

Thieves are continuing to look to prey on residents both over the phone and online. 

Please do not give any personal information or provide credit/debit card numbers. 

These are scams and you should never give out any personal information or send any money to anyone without first verifying the information. 

Some other tips:

Never pay taxes or fees in advance. 

Only do business with companies you know.

Only enter personal information on secure websites. They will be noted with https:// at the top of the screen.

If you feel pressured or rushed, stop, and consult with a family member before continuing. 

As always should you feel that you are a victim of a crime, please call 911 or Cornelius Police at 704-892-7773.
