TOWN OF MINT HILL: Mayor Brad Simmons Message and Update
0Comments

Town of Mint Hill issued the following announcement on Aug. 21.

With schools beginning their school year this week, I commend the efforts of our local staff as they tackle the continued challenges of educating students while prioritizing the health and safety of our community. I urge residents to be mindful of the increase in traffic as we navigate back-to-school congestion. With buses picking up passengers, children walking or riding their bikes, and parents dropping off their kids to begin the day, it is important we all slow down, practice patience and pay a little extra attention. I know we would all agree our children are the future of our community.

The Lebanon Road sidewalk extension project is underway and nearing completion. This project adds approximately 1,000 feet of sidewalk along Lebanon Road between Singletree Road and Green Glen Drive, including two new pedestrian crossings. The crossings feature a “rapid rectangular flashing beacon” safety device to indicate to drivers that pedestrians are using the crosswalk. These high-intensity yellow strobe light flashers (similar to police and fire strobe lights) are activated by the press of a button. The project is anticipated to be completed by fall of 2021.

As a reminder to residents working diligently to maintain their lawns and gardens this summer, please remember to clear grass clippings off of the street. Although seemingly harmless, clippings pose environmental and traffic safety threats to our community. Grass clippings washed into our stormwater system can easily clog a pipe or “super charge” our bodies of water with nutrients that are supposed to be on lawns, not in natural waterways. Clippings also make the road surface slick which could result in a vehicle being unable to stop in time. Let’s work together to keep Mint Hill safe by keeping clippings off our streets.

Regardless of vaccination status, masks are required inside Town Hall to maximize protection of our community and minimize the spread of the Delta variant. As many of our businesses in Town require masks to be worn for entry, I ask for respect of those policies.  Our small business owners cannot afford another shutdown and our hospitals are nearing capacity. With that in mind, I continue to encourage you to get vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccines are currently available in North Carolina for individuals ages 12 and up.
