Atrium Health and Novant Health are starting mobile COVID-19 testing facilities for faster and improve accessibility, specifically for minority families in Charlotte.
In addition to this, Novant Health intends to create a respiratory assessment center to screen and diagnose patients with respiratory problems at the Michael Jordan Family Clinic, the Charlotte Observer reported on April 14.
“The novel coronavirus affects people disproportionally as people with underlying chronic diseases are at a greater threat," Dr. Williams, Novant Vice President said in a statement to the Charlotte Observer. "Now, diseases like diabetes, hypertension, respiratory and lung diseases are over-represented in the African-American community. We need to address these disparities as soon as we can.”
The county data suggests that out of the 869 confirmed cases, 50% of the patients are black, the publication reported. Similarly, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 has also been of black people of the community. This is alarming because black people make only 33% of the county’s total population.
Insurance companies will be billed for the fee of these tests, however, patients who do not have coverage will not receive a statement.
