County of Mecklenburg issued the following announcement on Oct. 21.
The County’s Department of Social Services (DSS) Services for Adults Division will host the Scam Jam information session on Monday, Nov.18, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Valerie C. Woodard Conference Center (3205 Freedom Dr., Suite 4000, Charlotte).
The purpose of this event is to inform senior residents about financial fraud and exploitation. Participants will receive valuable information on investment and Medicare fraud as well as identity theft. Event speakers will represent agencies including the NC Attorney General’s Office, the NC Secretary of State, Centralina Area Agency on Aging and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
For every report of elder financial exploitation, 43 go unrecognized. These scams cost seniors $2.9 billion each year. DSS Services for Adults encourages seniors to become aware and prepared when targeted in these types of crimes. DSS staff will also provide attendees with information on how to file an adult protective services report.
Space is limited. To register call 980-314-6800 or email SFAevent@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov. The registration deadline is Monday, Nov. 4.
