The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services received a high number of reported sexually transmitted diseases in 2019, including in Mecklenburg County.
That number could be higher because many individuals don’t know they have them, so they don’t get treated. Those conditions include HIV, AIDS, gonorrhea and chlamydia.
Countywide, there were 200 reports of HIV, 49 cases of AIDS reported, 2,774 cases of gonorrhea, and 8,458 cases of chlamydia in the 2019 calendar year, according to Charlotte Alerts.
There has been a decrease in the number of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases over 2018. Charlotte Alerts reports that in 2018, there were 9,287 cases of chlamydia reported and 3,244 cases of gonorrhea in Mecklenburg County.
Both chlamydia and gonorrhea are treatable and curable if individuals get medical attention quickly and follow through when they’ve been diagnosed. These conditions can lead to other medical issues, including infertility, if not treated.
