A recent Mecklenburg County commissioners' meeting saw action on five projects and a message of solidarity with protests that have roiled the city.
During the meeting, commissioners approved to move forward with the Spirit Square in Uptown proposal and a plan for affordable housing in the Uptown area, WBTV reported on June 2.
Commissioners also decided to create a plan to track the goals of graduating seniors and to create a task force for COVID-19 renewal and recovery, WBTV reported. The fifth project is to see if coronavirus trends increase in hospitals.
Besides approving plans, commissioners expressed concern over racism in the county, WBTV reported.
“All of our hearts are heavy from what we’ve witnessed. I’m sick of us being back in a space where we’re protesting another tragedy in our country," Commissioner Jerrell told WBTV about the death of George Floyd. “I’m glad that we’re forced to face ourselves and talk about the systemic institutional structures that perpetuate racism and inequity."
