The Town Board requested NCDOT present an update on the South Trade Street project and the plans for completion. NCDOT officials provided an update during last night's Town Board meeting. We’ve included information below and the presentation can also be viewed here: https://youtu.be/XphwIQcep8U?t=7804 (begins around 2:10).
The following information is provided by NCDOT: The $3 million project includes expanding the road from two to four lanes between Chaphyn Place and Marque Place. A concrete median is also being built from Weddington Road to just north of Brenham Lane, giving motorists a right-in and right-out access at Brenham Lane. These improvements will reduce the potential for rear-end and angle crashes.
Work also includes extending the Four Mile Creek box culvert to the east and west, building headwalls for a future pedestrian culvert, and adding sidewalk and bicycle lanes.
The project team has encountered delays for several reasons:
- The contractor ran into difficulties in their excavation work for the culvert extension as planned, resulting in a phase change by moving to another area.
- Wet weather and flooding around the creek area have delayed progress on the culvert extension, which has been the controlling operation for most of the life of the project.
- Some utility companies have encountered problems locating their existing services, further delaying progression of the culvert work.
The contractor will need to complete the following items to move traffic into its final pattern (two lanes in each direction):
- Complete work on the 24” water line
- Complete storm drain work on the southbound side of the project
- Curb and gutter work
- Asphalt paving (all but the final lift of road surface)
- Sidewalk/handrail installation
- Guardrail installation
Weather depending, the contractor indicates this work can be completed in 2-3 months.
Once traffic is in its final pattern, crews will complete work on the 16” sewer line, build out concrete islands, pave the final surface and place permanent lane markings and signage. These items should be complete by spring 2021.
