City of Raleigh issued the following announcement on Aug. 28.
Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin, Raleigh City Council, County Commissioners, Chief of Police and City Managers and Faith and Business leaders will gather for the “Shine the Light” prayer vigil at Moore Square Park at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 29. The event will be a call for social equality and unity and healing in our community.
"It is so important, at this time in our City and our Country, that we honor the diversity of our community,” said Dr. Johnny Bernard Hill, Dean of Shaw University School of Divinity, who is helping organize the event. "The religious, racial and ethnic diversity in Raleigh is unique. It is my prayer that by bringing people together we can move forward together, and that the light of our city will shine."
Residents across Raleigh are asked to step outside at 9 p.m. and shine a light for unity and social peace in our community - a flashlight, cell phone, or candle - as a sign of solidarity and call for peace on our streets and in our police precincts.
“Now, more than ever, we need to find ways to come together and find our commonality. A desire for peace and understanding is universal. We are Raleigh. The strength of this great city is found in our diversity.” said Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin. “Each of us holds a light within us to share with the world. Saturday, I ask that you share your light to symbolize that we are unique individuals with the same intention- to live in a peaceful and loving community.”
The prayer vigil will feature speakers from religion, racial, and ethnically diverse faith groups, as well as moments for solitary reflection. The event is organized by the Shaw School of Divinity, the City of Raleigh, and Shop Local Raleigh. Those unable to attend can experience the event by following along on Twitter using #ShineRaleigh.
Attendees are asked to wear masks and will be asked to follow social distance requirements.
