Five Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers, including a sergeant, resigned after they were recommended for firings over the death of Harold Easter on Jan. 26 after he had a seizure in police custody, WCNC reported.
A review board recommended firing the officers, and CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings agreed, WCNC reported in late September.
"The sergeant and the officers had intimate knowledge that Mr. Easter had ingested and swallowed cocaine during the traffic stop," Jennings previously said, WCNC reported. "Additionally, the internal investigation determined Mr. Easter was left unattended inside an interview room for more than 20 minutes. At that time, he was clearly in need of medical attention."
Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather considered charging the officers with involuntary manslaughter but said there wasn't proof beyond a reasonable doubt, WCNC reported.
Alex Heroy, the attorney for Easter's family, said the officers "trying to escape accountability," by resigning before a board hearing, the story said.
